in which an exciting carriage chase leads to new companions and reveals a budding relationship

The previous session was somewhat short, consisting of a single extended scene. The protagonists chased "Lady Westin” and her retinue. The villains attempted a sort of pincer move, with two horse riders dropping behind our heroes’ carriage. Dr. Dallinger threw flaming items out of the carriage to deter the pursuers. Meanwhile, Miss Croft shot out the tires of the villains’ carriage and it came to a halt, but the horse riders rode on, abandoning Lady Westin and the rest of the carriage riders.

Westin was cagy at first, but Miss Green and Dr. Dallinger made it somewhat plain that they were aware she was not a human, which made her curious and more open. Westin began talking openly of her master, Doctor Mabuse (apparently pronounced “maBUsa”) and his plot to foil an alliance between England and some hidden power that possesses great weapons.

Quick summary of points and hints dropped: England is bringing a meteor to the meeting point, Caister Castle IIRC. The hidden power is brigning a finished weapon and possibly plans of some kind Mabuse is working with “The Lord of Strange Deaths" (Fu Manchu), a terrible crime lord operating in London whose name and appellation is known to Mr. Turnbull Fu Manchi has sent an advisor and apparently a werewolf(?!) to aid in this plot Westin is reactant to go against them because her “saplings” are in Mabuse’s power in Munich and Berlin Westin has planted a sapling inside one of the soldiers, the womanizing Coldstream Sergeant Archie Randolph

As it became clear that Westin was not acting in the best interests of her master, her people (and their Chinese guest) attacked. The man died, and his sister killed herself rather than be captured.

I THINK the Chinese man escaped. Certainly, the two people on horseback did.

The next session will likely focus on either convincing the Coldstream people that they are under some threat or else just trying to secretly intervene and defeat that threat.

Things to think about if you’re me: How did the villains know enough to follow the Coldstream people and move their plot along? Why would the most powerful empire in the world need to treat with another nation in such secrecy? How does the sheep mutilation figure in? What’s happening with Mr. Turnbull’s friend whose family has apparently been sucked into a religious cult?
